Iraqi Civil Defence Authority opts for new SKUM foam trailer from Tyco
The Iraqi Civil Defence Authority [ICDA] has taken delivery of 40 of the new Skum Rapid Response Foam Trailers (RAFT), a high-specification, cost-effective foam trailer designed and manufactured by Tyco Fire Suppression & Building Products. The order was negotiated by the Al-Abid Group, the Tyco Fire Suppression & Building Products partner based in Jordan.
The new RAFT units meet the Iraqi authority’s need for highly mobile, fast-response trailers that are able to withstand punishing use in the country’s harsh terrain and high ambient temperature environment.
The specification called for each twin-axle RAFT unit to have a 1800- litre capacity tank and be supplied with top-specification Macron Viking ‘Type 3’ fire hose. This was the largest order ever received for the maintenance-free, abrasion and heat resistant Viking ‘Type 3’ hose, providing the Iraqi Civil Defence Authority with what is widely recognised, says Tyco, as the finest hose on the market, replacing its old canvas hose stock.
RAFT units can be supplied with tank capacities of up to 2,300 litres, and can be fitted with Skum FJM manually-operated fire monitors to suit local site conditions. These heavy-duty monitors have adjustable flow range and long throw length, ensuring fast fire knock-down. They are constructed with built-in foam concentrate inductors that ensure reliable, accurate and adjustable proportioning between one percent and six percent for all types of foam concentrate, eliminating the need for a separate proportioning system. The monitors incorporate a constant flow nozzle, so the nozzle capacity is unchanged whether it is used to deliver a fog or jet of foam or water. They can be rotated through a full 360 degrees; its vertical elevation is between minus 60 degrees and plus 90 degrees, and can be locked in any desired operating position.
Especially suited to challenging hydrocarbon processing, petrochemical, heavy industrial, military and aviation environments, the RAFT units are built to provide years of low maintenance, trouble-free service.
The monitor has a stainless steel body and a bronze nozzle and bearings, and is mounted onto the unit’s fully-welded tank that is fabricated from 2.5mm thick stainless steel and incorporates a 250mm diameter auto-venting, quick-release fill lid, and 2.5mm thick internal baffle plates to minimise any surge.
The trailer incorporates a beam axle system to increase stability and reliability, and ensure its suitability for harsh locations. The stability of the new RAFT unit is further boosted by the incorporation of industrial heavy-duty, fully retractable prop stands with jacking pads on each corner, and the trailer’s suspension is far more reliable over rough terrain than any other suspension system.
The fast-track contract involved designing and manufacturing the RAFT trailers and providing the 7,000 hose lengths in a tight 16- week build programme that included testing and shipping.

Nedap and ASSA ABLOY join forces to offer bridge between wireless and mechanical access
Nedap Security Management is to integrate Aperio technology from Assa Abloy into its Aeos access control solution.
Aperio is a new technology that wirelessly connects mechanical doors to an existing electronic access control system, providing end-users with a simple way to raise the security level of their premises at a lower cost than a traditional system.
Eric Beaudru of Assa Abloy says: “Assa Abloy’s ambition is to offer flexible access control door locking and opening solutions. Aperio wireless technology has been designed for access control companies for effective and simple operation by security and IT managers.”
Joffry Maltha of Nedap says: “So far, organisations were unable to benefit fully from everything electronic access control has to offer. Secure, low-cost and easy-to-manage RFID cards could only be used at doors wired to the electronic access control system. Access to all other doors was still dependent on traditional patented keys, which are hard to keep track of, particularly in larger organisations. With the Aperio integration in Aeos 2.3, Nedap presents a truly ‘all-round’ access control system.”
